Chamber Workshop

Our Resume Writing / Interview Skills workshop was conducted as scheduled

at the Flint Energies auditorium in Reynolds on May 19, 2009.

The Taylor County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Flint Energies,

provided a workshop designed to give job applicants the skill to write a

resume that would attract the attention of potential employers in a

positive way.

The workshop also provided interactive role-play to give job applicants

the confidence to have a successful job interview.

The workshop was designed and professionally presented by Karen Garza, Sr.

Vice President of Corporate Services, Flint EMC.

Mrs. Garza covered the important items that should be on a job resume as

well as things that should NOT be included.

She also discussed the length of the resume and the importance of

neatness, proper language and spelling.

She made attendees aware that things that they do off the job can affect

their job or their chances of getting a job. Things such as criminal

behavior, or even lewd comments and photo's on social networking websites

like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube affect how you represent an

organization.

The workshop ended with a mock role-play designed to impress on attendees

the importance of dress, body language, eye contact, and professional

appearance as well as well thought out answers to questions that may be

asked.

The presentation was informative and thought provoking.

The Taylor County Chamber of Commerce is appreciative to Flint Energies

for providing the facility and to Mrs. Garza for her professional

expertise in presenting the workshop.

March - Chamber After Hours – Hot Rod Café

.

Our Chamber After Hours event on Thursday, March12, at the Silverdollar Raceway in Reynolds was a great success.

.

Thanks to Ed, Dorothy, Miss Georgia and all the staff of the Hot Rod Café we ate our fill of Hamburgers, French Fries, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Strawberry Cake and I don’t know what all else.  It was an excellent meal.

.

Karen Bridger, Senior Business Specialist, USPS, made an excellent presentation on comparing the benefits of using the United States Postal Service versus other means of shipping.

.

She used the word FREE many times in her presentation concerning the USPS and your mailing needs.  She can be contacted at - karen.e.bridger@usps.gov

.

If you do much shipping it is worth your while to compare prices - especially flat rate boxes.

.

Ed Swearingen made an equally good presentation on our chamber joining Presidential Pathways as a means of bringing more tourism to our community.

.

We would need to have a member of the chamber represent us at Presidential Pathways functions.  The board is considering his proposal.  Any volunteers?

.

The announcement was made for next months meeting.  Thursday, April 9 at the Bentley-Montford Mortuary.  This should be very interesting.  I wouldn’t miss it for anything.  I hope see you there.

Teresa and I represented the Taylor County Chamber of Commerce at the 3rd annual Peach County  Business After Hours event on Feb 19 in Fort Valley.

I was very pleased to tell the other chambers that Taylor County now has
51 members.

We are able to offer our membership discounted BC/BS Health insurance.

An effort is underway to provide discounted auto insurance to chamber
members as well.

Our 2009 meeting schedule will be after hours events at member businesses
intended to highlight their business.

We are partnering with the Reynolds Golf Club for a golf tournament on
Saturday July 18. "The Tradition Continues"

We have planned a work day at the golf course on Saturday, Feb 21 at
9AM. Bring a rake, wear warm clothes - it is going to start off cool.
We eat at 12 noon then go home. It's going to be more fun than work.

The board of directors has asked me to be the Programs Director for 2009.
If you would like to have a Business After Hours meeting at your place of
business please respond to me ASAP. We will work out a date and time.

I am also maintaining the chamber website for 2009.  I am a novice so please bear with me as I get the hang of it.

Chamber members are invited to place their announcements and special events on the chamber website.

"Spring Cleaning" at the Reynolds Golf Club on Feb 21, 2009
When the work started at 9AM it was 25 degrees.
Everybody agreed that it was cold - nobody complained.
The Reynolds Golf Club had hot coffee for everyone.
By 10AM the temperature had risen considerably.  The remainder of the workday was beautiful.
